I don't think that trying to keep animals as a source of food is feasible in the long run. They still often miscarry due to starvation (unfortunately the warning about starvation comes when it is already too late to save pregnancy), but I slowly increase their number anyway.

There's a lot of animals in my biomes, but if there was a smaller number, it would be impossible to keep my animals. I can support my animals only because I feed them simple meals, made from abundant wild animals, which I periodically hunt. Hay also grows slow, I even make kibble out of rice, because it's faster.īut economically it doesn't make sense, it's for bragging rights. And my map (or rather base area) is too small for the number of animals I have, the grasses and brambles don't regrow fast enough, and I need to increase rgazing area every season. I maintain a big amount of animals (bad habit from another game), but found that the only sensible way to sustain them is to let them graze. The only thing to consider is predators, if they don't have small game to hunt they might go for your colonists or animals, so either leave some rabbits/squirrels alone, or hunt all the predators as well.

Animals respawn along the edges of the map constantly, so feel free to wipe them all out as often as you want. The exception is human/insect meat kibble, which your colonists don't want to eat anyway, so turning that into kibble is a good way to get rid of it.Īs far as hunting all the animals on the map, don't worry about it. If you are feeding them kibble then you are losing protein, not gaining it, and the entire system becomes pointless.

Basically it allows you to convert a large amount of vegetable foods into a small amount of protein to make higher quality meals with for your colonists. The livestock system in the game only works if the animals are grazing or you have the manpower to spare maintaining a large haygrass farm. The amount of protein animals give is absolutely trivial compared to how much food they eat. If you are feeding any animal kibble, then you are losing protein compared to what you could ever possibly get in return from that animal. just be vary of chickens as they multiply very very fast. buy :) ) just make sure it is not used for pawn food as they do not like that.Įdit: alternative is to restrict the animals to be not in your base and they will grass/hunt on there own if there is food around like grass bushes and wild animals this is to prefer early game ( just keep a eye on them as raiders might attack the animals.Įdit: 2 make sure you do not store fert. Kibble is nice ( again use haygrass and mix with any meat you got a lot of, insect meat is very good for kibble so if you see traders sell it.

Make a animal zone that does not include your food stockpile and make a freezer in the animal zone to store food in you want the animals to eat,ĭepending on the biome you might need a shelter for the animals that can keep them warm. start on that asap, most animals will eat that, it grows kinda fast, the warg needs meat tho but make a dumping zone a bit away from your colony and restrict the warg to be around that area, this way it will eat the corpses from raiders
